Life insurance
Life insurance pays a benefit if the insured person dies during the term, and some policies add cover for a defined serious illness or total disability. Households use it to replace income, clear a debt, or leave a lump sum that buys time.
We start with the costs that would continue: housing, food, childcare, education, and any loan that is in one name. We then subtract savings you are willing to spend and any cover you already hold through work, so the sum insured is a gap, not a guess copied from a friend.
You should see the suicide exclusion period if the wording has one, the definition of any illness benefit, and whether the premium is level or can rise. A cheaper term that expires just as a dependant still needs support is not automatically the careful choice.
